Help count the votes

Vote secrecy relies on a key split into 5 pieces: 3 are needed to open the result. We are looking for independent, trusted people to hold these pieces.

🔑 L’Assemblée is looking for 4 independent key holders

L’Assemblée protects the secrecy of the vote with encryption whose key is split into 5 pieces. At least 3 of these 5 pieces must be brought together to decrypt the result of a ballot — never a single piece, never a single person.

Today, the 5 pieces are in the same hands (those that run the site). This is not a hidden flaw: it is written in black and white in the charter of L’Assemblée (article 8), and it is the only guarantee still missing for the secrecy of the vote to rest on a technical impossibility rather than on one person’s good faith.

What we are looking for

4 people who agree to each carry one piece of this key.

What it involves in practice

  • Receiving a key piece (a string of characters) and keeping it somewhere safe, offline (never in a mailbox, never on a cloud).
  • Being available, from time to time, to take part in a count (pasting your piece into your browser, together with two other holders, when a ballot ends) — a few minutes, remotely.
  • Never revealing your piece to anyone, including the other holders.
  • Being named publicly: your identity as a holder is known (not your piece), for transparency — everyone should know who could, in theory, agree with two other holders to read an individual vote.

What we look for in candidates

People whose interests are deliberately different from one another (not 5 close friends, not 5 people from the same small circle) — that is what makes malicious collusion unlikely. No technical skill required.

How it works in practice

The key has already been generated and split into 5; the remaining pieces will be handed to each holder found, then permanently deleted from the place where they are gathered today.
